What Is Acupuncture?
The general theory of acupuncture is that proper physiological function and health depend on the optimal circulation of blood, nutrients and vital energy known as Qi (pronounced “chi”). Qi originates in the major organs and flows along continuous circulatory channels called meridians.
Acupuncture points along the meridians can be stimulated to enhance the energy flow related to specific organs.
Shan Mao, L.Ac.M.S.
Dr. Shan Mao was born and raised in China - the daughter of a father who was a prominent dentist and the president of the Dental Department of a hospital, and a mother who was respected academic and a school teacher. She was raised with a love of learning as well as a passion for medicine
For over 30 years Dr. Mao has successfully treated patients in China, Japan and in the U.S. She understands the profound benefits that the combination of Western medicine and authentic Chinese medicine can produce for a wide variety of ailments.
After graduating from Qingdao Medical University in 1982, Dr. Mao enjoyed being on staff and serving as President of the Dental Department at Yan Er Dao Hospital in China until 1989.
Her quest for knowledge and adventure led her to accept an opportunity to conduct research in dentistry at the well-known Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan in 1989. From there, Dr. Mao was accepted at the renowned Yokota Orthodontic Clinic and Research Institute in Fukuoka, Japan.
While in Japan, she researched and received Certificates in Clinical Prosthodontics and Implantology, and Clinical and Surgical Orthodontics. In 1997, the First International Conference of Achievements in Combining Oriental and Western Medicine awarded Dr. Mao the prestigious Excellent Thesis Award for her research on The Non-Pharmacotherapy Treatment of Herpes Zoster.
Dr. Mao moved to the United States in 2000 to pursue her love of the American culture and Eastern medicine. She chose to study Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine at the renowned Samra University of Oriental Medicine in Los Angeles and became a Board Certified Acupuncturist and Herbalist.
As a practicing oral surgeon, Dr. Mao saw the vital role that acupuncture played in significantly improving the post-operative recovery of her patients. She now sees the benefits it provides as an adjunct to Western medicine in restoring vitality, stimulating the immune system, easing pain and delivering well-being to patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions.
Extremely thin needles are inserted through the skin at specific acupuncture points to achieve the desired rejuvenation of affected areas.
Most patients feel little or no pain during the treatment and many feel relaxed or energized by it.
Acupuncture is becoming increasingly understood and accepted by Americans. More than 20 million adults have tried acupuncture since it was introduced in the United States in the 1970s and as additional 50% would consider acupuncture as a treatment option.
Recent scientific studies have found that acupuncture:
-
Relieves pain and improves function for people with osteoarthritis of the knee.
-
Helps in treating chronic lower back pain.
-
Helps alleviate nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
-
Can be useful in treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.
"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
